Norwegian Youth Symphony Orchestra (NUSO)
Norsk Ungdomssymfoniorkester (NUSO) is a national youth symphony orchestra, with members from all over Norway. It is run by The Norwegian Youth Orchestra Association, an organization for children and youth orchestras in Norway. NUSO has in its 20 years of existence made a tremendous impact on young orchestra musicians. Many of our previous members are now professional musicians. The orchestra is a full symphonic orchestra with about 100 members between the ages of 13 and 22. To become a member, one has to apply and audition by sending a tape, and professional musicians in Norway pick the best candidates.
The orchestra has performed at all the major concert venues in Norway, participated in orchestra festivals in Edinburg and Barcelona, and has even had several TV appearances together with talented youths. Many major symphonic works have been on the repertoire and selected soloists and conductors like Leif Ove Andsnes, Arve Tellefsen, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Bjarte Engeset, Henning Kraggerud and Ole Edvard Antonsen have worked and performed with NUSO.
Our goal is to offer a broad type of orchestra training and give youths a personal musical experience. Not only will young musicians meet and work with well-known soloists and conductors, but we also emphasize the experience itself- being part of a large orchestra and learn how to cooperate and respect people from different backgrounds. Every year the orchestra plays different music from the classical repertoire (Brahms, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky) and rehearses in different venues in Norway. The summer session normally takes place within a 10-day period. The session has a variety of orchestra rehearsals, chamber music, and group rehearsals run by members of The Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and other professional ensembles. All sessions end up in a full program orchestra concert.
Norsk Ungdomssymfoniorkester is funded by Arts Council Norway and The Norwegian Youth Orchestra Association is funded by the Norwegian government, Ministry of Children and Equality. Our administration is run by director
